This document is a detailed report on the Cardiff BSAC expedition to survey and document the wreck of the Thor in Milford Haven.

Overview of the Thor Wreck Survey Project

A detailed survey and archaeological assessment of the wreck of the Thor, a Dutch coastal coaster sunk in 1943, conducted by Cardiff BSAC in October 2008, involving detailed mapping, photography, and marine life recording.

Expedition Details and Funding

The project was led by Teresa Darbyshire with Rhian Lewis James as mentor, supported by Cardiff BSAC and funded by a £500 BSAC expedition grant (BEGS-08-05).

  • The grant was awarded in December 2007 to support the survey.
  • The expedition involved multiple contributors, including authors and photographers.
  • Cardiff BSAC provided support, including use of the RIB boat.

Expedition Goals and Background

The expedition aimed to locate and document wreck sites in West Wales to enhance diver knowledge and share GPS data.

  • Main goal: find wreck sites, record locations, and provide tidal info.
  • Cardiff BSAC regularly dives in West Wales, mainly around Milford Haven.
  • Common sites include Dakotian, Behar, Lucy; many wrecks lack precise coordinates.
  • No current Welsh diving guidebooks; old wreck books are out of print.
  • Internet info is limited on exact wreck locations; tidal and slack time data often inaccurate.
  • 2010: club acquired side scan sonar and received BSAC grant for organized exploration.
  • Highlights: discovery of Kerloch (new wreck), reporting it to coastguard, publicity via DIVE magazine.
  • Last major find: St Jacques (offshore, 35m depth); Balholm remains elusive.
  • The expedition continues to find more wrecks and publish data online
