Club trip with In Deep

Cardiff BSAC heads back to Plymouth for another fantastic weekend of diving

Twelve members of Cardiff BSAC headed back to Plymouth on 20–21 June for another fantastic weekend diving with In Deep aboard Searcher. After travelling down on Friday and checking into the Leonardo Hotel, most of the group met at Wetherspoons before an early night ahead of four dives across the weekend.

Our skipper, Sam, and deckhand, Alex, did a brilliant job, from helping everyone kit up to sharing the history of each site. Their professionalism and local knowledge made the whole weekend run effortlessly.

Saturday’s dives took us to two of Plymouth’s iconic wrecks: the Scylla and the James Eagan Layne. Visibility was better than on our last club visit in 2024, giving us a great view of both wrecks and the marine life that now calls them home. Crayfish, wrasse and a cuttlefish were among the highlights as we explored the wreckage.

After a well-earned group meal on Saturday evening, Sunday brought near-perfect conditions. The fog had disappeared, the sea was almost mirror-flat and temperatures climbed to around 25°C. Thanks to an early start organised by the crew, we were able to dive the WWII wreck of the Persier, before finishing the weekend at Fairyland Reef, while still getting everyone home at a sensible time.

The wildlife was as impressive as ever. Across the four dives we encountered a spotted ray, cuttlefish, octopus, conger eels, a john dory, countless crayfish and spider crabs, plus an inquisitive wrasse that seemed just as interested in us as we were in it. With visibility reaching around 10 metres on the final dive, Fairyland Reef provided the perfect end to the weekend.

A huge thank you to Sam, Alex and everyone at In Deep for another superb trip. Great diving, great company and four successful dives made it another memorable Cardiff BSAC weekend away—and we’re already looking forward to the next one.
